Iris June Thornton Smith Obituary (1929 - 2018)

Iris June Thornton Smith, 89, lived in the Nance Community for seventy-two years, died on Saturday, December 22, 2018, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Her death was of natural causes. June was born on June 1, 1929, in Crockett County, TN to William Claude and Gladys Boyd Thornton of Alamo, TN. She had two siblings, Elwanda Thornton Reece and William (Billy) Boyd Thornton. She was married to Barney Dorris Smith on June 8, 1946. They resided in the Nance Community all of their married years and were members of the Nance Church of Christ. June graduated from Alamo High School in 1946. She was a homemaker until her two daughters, Pat and Dorris Jean began school. In 1957, she accepted employment at Southern Foundations in Alamo, TN. In 1973, she retired as a supervisor of a division of Kellwood Company. After, retirement she was bookkeeper for Smith Service Center in Trenton, TN. June has been a resident of Bells Assisted Living and recently resided at Bells Nursing Home. She is survived by her two daughters, Pat Whitby and husband Eddie and D.J. Kail; grandchildren, Alan Whitby, Jill Kail Hartnett, Brian Whitby, Connie Whitby LaRue, and Anne-Taylor Kail; nine great-grandchildren, Trace Whitby, Noah, Eden, and Seth LaRue, Bailey Ann, Audrey, and Addison Whitby, and Madeline and Barnes Hartnett. June was predeceased by her husband, Barney; sister, Elwanda; brother, Billy. Services will be held Friday, December 28, 2018, at 2:00 pm at Ronk Funeral Home in Alamo, TN with Bill Mitchusson minister of the Nance Church of Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Nance Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at 1:00 pm Friday, December 28, 2018, at Ronk Funeral Home.
