"Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you."
-- Shannon Alder
He definitely left us a legacy of unconditional love and a plethora of stories told...and untold.
Harry Vincent Slayton passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023 with his best friend and wife, Shirley, and their daughters by his side.
Respected and loved by many, Harry was born on January 13, 1947 in Brownsville, Tennessee. He began school in Friendship and completed high school in Crockett Mills, graduating from Hamlett Robertson School in 1964. From a farming family to the beginning of his own family, Harry worked and learned from his many experiences. From pumping gas and fixing lawn mowers in local service stations to selling parts at the salvage yard to perfecting the art of customer service and kindness at the country club, Harry worked tirelessly in multiple careers at a time to shower his wife and spoil his three daughters with all the things they needed and even all of the things they wanted. Finally, In Alamo, he and Shirley took a leap of faith and built and ran their own convenient store and auto business. Memories of Slayton's One Stop and Highway 20 Body Shop, where he was known by many as the best "body man" in West Tennessee, still come up in conversations today more than fifty years later. Helping others was always his passion and his profession. From insurance adjusting to a trucking business, Harry recently retired as the owner and operator of Convenient Pawn, Etc., where he helped an immeasurable amount of customers by treating them like family for the last 25 years.
Harry leaves behind the love of his life, Shirley, just one week short of their 59th wedding anniversary; three devoted daughters, Tina Ackermann (Keith), Marty Jordan (Roy), and Jada Sherfey (Michael); five proud grandchildren, Aubree Magnussen (Steven), Alex Ackermann (Sarah), Andee Ackermann, Harrison Sherfey, and Houston Sherfey; six precious great-grandchildren, Lily, Carson, Addie Joy, Ava Lee, Faith, and Jaron; mother-in-law, Virginia Jo Ottinger; sister-in-law, Joan Jones (Wendell); nieces, Beverly Coleman, Brenda Spicer, and Linda Jones; his spoiled fur-babies, Roxy, Pinky, and Buddy; and more dear family members and a multitude of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Lacy Slayton; his sister, Doris Ann Coleman (J.C.); his brother, McKinley Slayton (Joyce); and his father in law, J.B. Ottinger; and niece, Stacey Davis (Bruce).
Visitation will be 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Ronk Funeral Home in Alamo, Tennessee, with a celebration of his life following at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be afterwards at Providence Baptist Church in Crockett Mills, Tennessee.
