Elton Eugene Martin

–

Alamo, Tennessee

"Gene" Martin, born on St. Patrick's Day in 1939, was raised in the old Ft. Pickering neighborhood in Memphis, TN. After graduation from Treadwell High School 1956, he joined the US Army and then the United States Postal Service as a clerk, North Area Manager Memphis district and then Postmaster of Millington, retiring in 1993.

He was married, and survived by his wife of 61 years, Brenda Hope Feezor, had four children - Pat (Sandra), Kevin (Terri), Scott (Carla) and Kelli (Milly). He adored his 17 grandchildren and many great grand-children. Also survived by Shelia Martin, sister-in-law and William Bill McGhie (Carol) first cousin raised as a brother. Preceding in death were his parents James Wiley Martin and Rosabelle Kirkpatrick Martin along with his two brothers James Wiley (Jimmy) and Robert Earl (Robby) Martin.

The University of Memphis had a special place in Gene's heart; he was a "loud and proud" spectator of Tiger sports and Highland 100 member, especially arguing with the referees. He enjoyed the Moose Lodge golf & bowling league, and was a founding member and coach of Egypt Shelby Youth Sports league after being a member of Spring Hill SYS. An avid gardener and cook, he honored his Celtic heritage every year with a family birthday celebration. Family always came first for Gene; he made time for every ball game, school event, wedding and birth. He encouraged all of the children to be close and supportive of each other; as he recognized the importance of a close-knit family. Gene always had a story, and never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed, but remembered with love.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to MAW (Methodist Association of Women) c/o Cypress United Methodist Church, 585 Cypress Church Rd, Bells, TN 38006.
